Bushy’s Honoured to Brew TT Marshal’s 50th Anniversary Ale

We at Bushy’s Brewery feel honoured to have been asked to brew a beer to commemorate the TT Marshals Association’s 50th Anniversary. We’ve been in negotiations with the TTMA Committee for a few months now, and it’s been decided to launch the beer at the CAMRA real ale festival (12th to 14th April 2012) at the Masonic Hall in Douglas.

It will be a 4% GOLDEN ALE (50th right?) dry hopped with GOLDINGS hops, and following the launch, available primarily during the TT in May/June, and then the MGP at the end of August, with the aim of ten pence per pint going towards the TTMA coffers. Cheers!

Bushy’s Beer Tent Approved For Weddings!

The Bushy’s Beertent has finally received permission to allow weddings to take place at the venue during the TT Festival.

It must be stressed that each application would have to be treated individually, and applied for as such, as we do not hold one of the coveted “blanked approvals”, but we think it’s an exciting addition to Bushy’s capabilities.

There were quite a few things that needed to be satisfied before the authorities would give the go ahead, but the Registry were very helpful, and we have our first wedding booked, which is going to be great fun.

If anyone out there is interested in getting married in the Bushy’s Beertent (we can do Civil Partnerships too) please contact Martin on martin@bushys.com and he’ll run through how it works, though I must warn you, the Registrars flatly refuse to dress as Elvis Presley!

Bushy’s brewery has turned the clock back over half a century by becoming the first Manx brewery to use Manx grown barley it its beers. We’ve tried for a few years to make this happen, but the different farmers have hit snags along the way, meaning the cereal wasn’t up to the exacting standards required by our maltsters at Warminster.
That has now changed with the crop grown by Pentti Christian from Ellerslie farm who have done the business and met the standards.
It really did feel like the old “Delmonte” advert when we sent off our samples for testing, and thankfully this year, instead of getting the thumbs down signal that we’ve had for the last 4 years, this year he said YES!
Curly, the Bushy’s head brewer has given the Manx batch his seal of approval, declaring it “top notch” and using it in all his brews, in differing amounts.
There are now several crops growing at different locations, and Pentti is planning to keep us supplied with as much Manx barley as we can use. Well done and thanks.

Following last years runner up award in CAMRA’s pub of the year competition, the Bay in Port Erin has gone one step further this year, and won the award outright. It’s very much a team effort, and credit must go to all the staff that have made this happen. Congratulations and well done!!

Bushy’s brewery keeping fingers crossed!

Bushy’s brewery are keeping their fingers crossed that this year’s barley crop comes up to the high standards required for it to be malted for use in making the finest ales.

Pentti Christian of Ellerslie farm has been overseeing the crop, which if succesful would see Manx barley used in brewing for the first time since the 1950′s.

Malting barley has different needs from other types, and relies heavily on getting rainfall and sunshine in exactly the right times, as well as subtle use of fertilizers. Good luck Pentti!

The Bay is CAMRA Pub of the year (runner up)

The Bay staff are celebrating the news that they have been voted runner up in the 2010 Pub of the Year Camra awards. The winner was the Whitehouse in Peel, who have now won it ( deservedly ) for an unprecedented 3 years running. It makes you wonder if it’s like the World Cup, whereby 3 years winning entitled Brazil to keep the trophy! The other runner up, incidentally was the Rovers Return, our sister pub in Douglas, which goes some way to reinforce our claim of Bushy’s being the Island’s favourite beer.

Beer Festival planned for MGP 2010

The Bay are planning a real ale and cider festival to run for the 2 weeks of this year’s Manx Grand Prix. The starting date will be Friday 21st August and it will run until the final Race day on the 3rd of September, or until the beer runs out!! There will be at least 2 dozen beers on offer, plus many real ciders and perry, both on draught and in bottle.
